These five foundational texts trace forty years of Black lesbian and queer thought, personal history, and fiction.

1. Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde (1984)

This collection of essays and speeches serves as a cornerstone of Black lesbian feminist thought. Lorde addresses race, gender, sexuality, and power, examining how silence fails to protect marginalized groups and how differences can serve as sources of creative power.

2. Zami: A New Spelling of My Name by Audre Lorde (1982)

Lorde defined this work as a "biomythography," combining biography, history, and myth. It details her coming of age as a Black lesbian in 1950s New York, tracing her path from Harlem to the downtown bar scene while documenting a community forming its identity.

3. The Color Purple by Alice Walker (1982)

Winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, this novel centers on Celie’s journey from abuse to self-possession and her relationship with Shug Avery. Walker’s depiction of Black female queer desire and personal liberation remains a landmark work in American literature.

4. Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay (2017)

In this memoir, Gay examines body image, trauma, weight, and desire. As a bisexual Black woman, she addresses the physical and social realities of navigating public spaces, avoiding simplified narratives of self-acceptance in favor of a direct accounting of personal experience.

5. Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson (2014)

Written in verse, this memoir recounts Woodson’s childhood during the 1960s and 1970s across South Carolina and New York. The National Book Award winner focuses on family history, the Civil Rights Movement, and her development as a writer.
