Makana Yamamoto: The Obake Code

A stand-alone sequel sends the galaxy’s most infamous hacker on her own heist.

Makana Yamamoto

Makana Yamamoto’s The Obake Code was published in February 2026. It is the second of three interconnected stand-alones that began with Hammajang Luck.

The novel is set three years after the first book and follows Malia, the hacker known as the Obake, a fan favorite from Hammajang Luck. Set for life after the score of a lifetime, Malia is bored. Rigging underground cybernetic fights for fun lands her on the wrong side of a gang leader, who gives her a choice: take down a corrupt politician or die. She assembles her own crew and takes the job.

Yamamoto has called the book a stand-alone sequel, meaning new readers can start here. The author’s interviews describe it as a queer cyberpunk heist novel about healing from trauma and being loved for who you are.
